29/6/2012 VulnerabilityIs it not in our sharing of our vulnerability that we really allow others to open up too?
This should be a precept of all Healing modalities. We cannot sit on the fence and judge others. We cannot assume we know better. We cannot dictate outcomes. We cannot make decisions on another's behalf. To do any of these things means we are doing the person a disservice. Not only does it create dependency but also boosts the ego of the so called 'giver'. In the long run this is harmful to both parties. So why does the medical model appear to do all of these things? Whilst this may not be the way that doctors wish to operate they are encapsulated by an impersonal system. As psychologists will tell you a system has its own culture and traditions which compromise the individual should they wish to 'succeed' or operate on an 'acceptable' level. There seems to be an element of control and fear here. Keeping people afraid of their bodies and even more afraid of making decisions about their own health creates total reliance on a system that is dictated to by the pharma companies. In mental health new diagnoses are invented to fit ordinary human emotions in order to reduce many to dependency on drugs. The side effects then require further medication, it's a vicious circle. There is much debate going on around these issues as the new DSM (diagnostic and statistical manual for mental health) is due to be published soon. Western medicine and technology has produced incredible results in many areas however, it does not have all the answers. Some humility would therefore be expected. There are other ways of looking at the same problems to find solutions which offer choice. We are all vulnerable when it comes to our health; be that of mind, body or spirit. A practitioner has a duty to first do no harm. This in my eyes, should mean seeking alternative non-invasive methods when possible. A practitioner also needs to acknowledge their own vulnerabilites and when appropriate share these. One of my favourite films is 'Patch Adams' starring Robin Williams. This is loosely based on the true story of a medical student who emphasises patients' feelings and thought processes first. In doing so he exemplifies deep sharing and vulnerability - in other words he is human and treats everyone with equal respect. May we all find the strength to be that honest, not only as practitioners but in every moment of life.

28/6/2012 Techno crap and habit breakingWhy is it that the things allegedly designed to assist you are often the most annoying?
I thought about this today as I have spent over a week trying to access my business emails to no avail. [email protected] I kept being told that the administrator (me!) had not authorised access. H'mmm. I also bought a smart phone which turns out to be smarter than me right now. HOWEVER... Having decided that I would succeed even if it was seemingly against the odds, I changed my attitude and the results of my attempts to thwart technology's logical, linear operations were championed with success! Two things were important here. 1) My new belief that I would find an easy way to sort this out. 2) Relaxing and allowing - in other words releasing any emotional investment in the outcome. These both relied on breaking a habit. As humans we so easily get into routines and very fixed ways of doing things. When these no longer work because the situation has changed, we percevere with the same out moded ways of coping regardless and then often end up distressed when things don't turn out as we wish. By letting go of the emotional content and seeing this whole proceedure as a game I was able to stand aside from the irritation and 'play'. This opens up a creative approach by activating the right brain which sees the bigger picture and is more spacially aware. I then actually enjoyed solving the problems and out of nowhere found the 'right buttons to press'. If we could only see life as a game to be played and not a competition to be won I am certain we would all be a lot happier, healthier and more willing to cooperate with others too. 27/6/2012 My Inner ChildMy Inner Child
dances and sings, plays contentedly in her own imaginary world, as I look on in awe. At times she turns and facing me her lips part - as the breaking of dawn so the sunshine of her smile warms me to my core. She takes my hand softly, gently showing me the way. Her light feet skip as she giggles whilst I hold back - remembrances of responsibilities and eons of must and should and ought. I dig in my heels yet knowing only too well that time does not stand still. My Inner Child dances and sings reminding me of the joy. And so I take a deep breath, resolving to engage, I step into the void allowing a future to emerge as I catch up with all that preexists wishing to greet me with open arms. 26/6/2012 Refugee WeekThis week is National Refugee week. I attended a First Aid course to update my skills at the local Red Cross Centre. This was organised for cross cultural groups and I feel honoured to say I know many of the people who attended.
There was a lovely mix of many cultures, religions, races and languages but the best part was that we all recognised that we are each quintessentially human and sharing this beautiful planet. After learning to save lives with training in first aid practical methods, conversation also touched on saving lives in other ways. Several participants gave their stories of arriving as refugees in England and how after terrible turmoil and emotional distress, they eventually found their feet and created new lives through hard work and the opportunities afforded them by this country. It actually made me feel 'proud' that we help many people who are completely dispossessed through no fault of their own. There but for the grace of god go all of us. Also I personally feel we have a legacy of good fortune built upon the backs of many of the countries from which these people originate and therefore we have a 'duty' to support them as they try to rebuild their lives. Throughout history we have been interconnected. Indeed as humans upon this planet we are all inextricably connected. What one country does affects all others in a ripple effect around the world. We cannot shut our eyes and ears to suffering anywhere on the globe as it is a reflection of our own individual soul journey. What we neglect on the outside will have repercussions upon our internal world even if we have no obvious conscious awareness of this. Through joining hands with our neighbours, be that within our own neighbourhood or on a larger scale, we can make a difference to how everyone lives. It is time to recognise that your values and actions can create tremendous shifts in attitudes in others. What you do is valuable even if it is a small gesture such as a smile - if it is sincere it will reach the heart of another. So reach out to those around you and offer assistance. You will be surprised at the love and raised self esteem you will experience in return. There is no separation, we are all one. 24/6/2012 Be heard - not herd!I am greatly encouraged when I go out into the world now as I am constantly meeting people who are sick of the state of affairs.
Political and economic systems are being manipulated to serve the few and enslave the majority. More and more people are waking up to this fact and wanting to 'drop out' of this way of dealing with things. The question is how to achieve this and what should be done to enable the changes we wish to see? It is now more than ever up to the individual to speak their truth and remain empowered by this simple action. The time is ripe to be heard. Do not remain part of the herd, trotting along behind the rest of the sheeple. Voice your opinions and share them with others. Yes, of course some will agree with you and others not but that is part of the dialogue without which nothing will change in our hearts and minds. By having the courage to speak from heart and to listen attentively to others we naturally give them permission to share their truths. In doing so we ourselves learn so much. Whenever I have done volunteer Healing in hospices the greatest 'reward' was to share people's heartfelt joys and regrets and to feel communion on a soul level. This more than anything is what is needed now in every situation. Dont be daunted by the "I cant make a difference" excuse. Start small by talking to trusted friends and then branch out to neighbours and work colleagues until you are happy to talk and share with anyone you meet.. You may end up being very surprised at just how much is actually going on in your neighbourhood that encourages people in your locality to join together in whatever way to make a difference. Added together these small conversations act as a tidal wave upon the shore of indifference. Oases of cooperation are appearing in the desert of competition and they are not mirages! "Many mystics have explored the cosmic meaning of the Gospel story and they tend always towards the same conclusion, which will probably not surprise you at all. In a mysterious way that we do not fully understand, the events of Jesus’ life channelled a cosmic energy into the whole of humanity, blessing us with the potential to be more loving, compassionate and conscious.
This, for many, is the heart of mystic Christianity. The Gospel story is not just about Jesus but suggests the extraordinary idea that Love is an active cosmic agent transforming and manifesting in everything including everyone of us. Isn’t this one of the most profound and precious aspects of spirituality? Surely everyone who has ever given or received healing or been touched by the sheer beauty of existence knows about this Love." William Bloom. The astrological events in our heavens at this time are suggestive of great paradigm shifts and this is also reflected in the prophesies of Mayan, Toltec and many other sources. Everything is pointing to a change in the level of consciousness of the human race. In essence this is the time in which the 'Christ Conciousness' is becoming available to us all. It is up to each and every one of us to consider how far we wish to go on our own personal journey of manifesting this higher level of being in order to bring forth the 'promised' world that we have all been told is the reward after death when in fact it is meant to be a living reality here on earth. with Love and Blessings - Sharon 21/6/2012 Summer SolsticeToday is the Summer Solstice. The longest day of the year here in the Northern hemisphere. In other words, more daylight today than at any other time in the year. Daylight yes perhaps, but sunlight definitely not. Its been very grey and totally overcast all day so far. English summer and flaming June!
At times like these its always good to look inwards and see what lights up your heart and makes you smile. The sun whether you can see it or not has moved into the sign of Cancer which is very much about security and strong home roots. By looking inside we can rediscover our own personal roots and truths which give us a sense of security. Giving time to contemplation on this level reconnects us to our soul's message and purpose and helps us to feel a deep connection with life and this earth rather than the dog eat dog competition that often seems to pervade everything. Cancer is a Cardinal sign which means it likes to initiate things. So dust off those plans, its time to step forward and make them happen. Use your inner peace and guidance to show you the way - it provides a brighter light upon your path than either daylight or sunlight! 19/6/2012 New Moon, new beginnings...Yesterday saw the first meeting of a new supportive group. We discussed what we each envisaged the group would provide. This included a safe space in which we could mutually share experiences, both good and bad, and from which we would derive non-judgemental support in gaining fresh perspectives in order to move forward with renewed confidence.
It was seemingly perfect timing to create these intentions as the balsamic moon is a day to contemplate what has passed and how one wishes to use the wisdom gained since the last new moon to envisage new possibilities. Today's new moon is in Gemini. It is the second new moon in Gemini within a month which is unusual. Gemini is the sign of information gathering and communication. It concerns itself with facts rather than meanings and so it is useful to continually review and asssess what one is hearing, seeing and indeed saying to oneself. Setting intentions on the day of the new moon, based on present information, sets the scene for the next four weeks and focuses our attention on what it is we wish to achieve. We are moving into yet another socially 'challenging' time astrologically and therefore having specific goals but flexible approaches is to be recommended in order to prevent us from sliding into seemingly chaotic events and possible emotional turmoil. 17/6/2012 Into the blue...If there were a place in blue,
A ripple on the plane of eternity, I could find my way there through you. Vibrant, translucent turquoise, A melting of form and identity. All knowing, all loving all... I could find my way there with you. I have a Scorpio ascendent which means I am a bit suspicious of things and particularly peoples' motives. I also don't like the feeling that someone else may be controlling my destiny! Yesterday I went to sign on after being persuaded to do so by several friends. Yes, I am entitled to it but the 'fear' was that I would be 'told' what to do and was signing up to a system which I do not want to have anything to do with. By this I don't mean benefits, I've had cause to rely on those before. I mean the whole fiasco that calls itself government but is nothing other than a puppet show controlled elsewhere!!!
The advisor in the Job Centre was delightful and very supportive of my wish to become self-employed. I found myself having to shut up about justifying myself as it wasn't necessary. I am asking for what is rightfully due to me - and how many people have I advised to do likewise in my previous roles as Carer Support Worker and also Advocate!?! The faceless 'system' however, does not have your interest at heart and is wilfully stealing, cheating and generally scamming the populace which includes YOU. Be very aware of this. So take the approach of preparing for battles where there are none - by that I mean get informed and understand what is going on right now. Find out what you can do to protect yourself, your family and your community by networking and cooperating on a local level. The martial arts approach of using one's skills for defence only is imperative here. Dont buy into the drama but stay vigilant.!!! The phrase "be in the world but not of it" is an absolute must in these times ahead. |
