My Inner Child

My Inner Child
dances and sings,
plays contentedly
in her own imaginary world,
as I look on in awe.

At times she turns
and facing me
her lips part -
as the breaking of dawn
so the sunshine of her smile
warms me to my core.

She takes my hand
softly, gently
showing me the way.
Her light feet skip
as she giggles
whilst I hold back -
remembrances of responsibilities
and eons of must and should and ought.
I dig in my heels
yet knowing only too well
that time does not stand still.

My Inner Child
dances and sings
reminding me of the joy.
And so I take a deep breath,
resolving to engage,
I step into the void
allowing a future to emerge
as I catch up with all
that preexists
wishing to greet me with open arms.
